I recently had the incredible opportunity to travel to England and debate at the historic Cambridge Union. The motion on the floor was: “This house believes BLM’s intentions were more important than its methods,” and I was invited to take the negative position.
In a world where disagreement is often shouted down, it was refreshing to engage with students and present a scholarly, evidence-based argument. I urged the audience to remember that “the road to hell is paved with good intentions,” and that we must judge social movements by their provable methods, not just their vague or lofty aspirations. By simply presenting the facts and relying on critical thinking, our side won the debate in a landslide, with 171 students voting against the motion compared to only 66 in favor.
As Pastor Rob Pacienza discussed in the recent Truths that Transform broadcast featuring my debate, we are living in a cultural moment marked by confusion and compromise. But scripture calls us to “hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering”. I was amazed to see how God orchestrated this entire trip and provided me with a wonderful team, reminding me that truth still has a powerful voice even in places you might not expect.
We must not retreat, tweak our message, or silence ourselves. We are called to be bold truth-tellers in a world that desperately needs to hear it.
