In this episode of Cow Guy Close, I joined Scott to discuss something that deeply concerns me: the growing division in Congress and the refusal of some lawmakers to affirm what should be a basic principle, that the first responsibility of our government is to protect American citizens.
There was a time, particularly in the 1980s and 1990s, when members of Congress disagreed strongly but still respected one another and appeared to care about the well-being of the American people. Democrats and Republicans worked together more often than they do today.
What I see now is different.
The level of hostility directed at the President and the unwillingness of some leaders to stand in support of protecting American citizens over illegal entrants reflects a system that is increasingly broken. I believe the Democratic Party needs to find its soul again. Hatred should not drive public policy.
I also address the personal reality of speaking out in today’s climate. I have received significant online hostility and threats, serious enough that law enforcement has become involved. When members of Congress model disrespect and extreme rhetoric, it filters down into the culture.
We must do better. Our nation deserves leadership grounded in responsibility, civility, and a shared commitment to the American people. Thank you for watching and engaging thoughtfully.
